Samaritan Project
The Samaritan Project
At Lyttelton Methodist Church, we believe in sharing God’s love through acts of kindness and compassion. The Samaritan Project, led by Barbara Briedenhann, is one of the many ways we serve our community by helping those in need.
The Samaritan Project focuses on collecting non-perishable food items donated by our church community. These donations are used to create food parcels, which are then distributed to families within our congregation and the broader community who are facing difficult times.
This project was started in July 1990 by Owen and Sharon Calverley from Olifantsfontein with the assistance of Doug Lees. Sharon and Owen had observed many children walking long distances to attend the farm school in Olifantsfontein sparsely dressed in the cold winter. Doug and Owen paid a visit to the school to see if they could help.
This started a feeding scheme. Most of the parents were unemployed and therefore little food was available, this resulted in a lack of concentration in the classroom through hunger and tiredness. Our congregation in their generous way responded to the appeal for money, warm clothing and food enabling the Samaritan project to immediately start supplying the children with soup, pap and bread every school day.
Soon, companies in and around Olifantsfontein became involved with the school and the needs were met. The Samarian team then turned their attention to the plight of people mainly in our own area through to Pretoria West who were battling to make ends meet. Again, an appeal went to the congregation for donations to purchase food and a basket was also placed in the church foyer for those who provided in kind.

This is an ongoing project that relies on donations, giving and financial injection from member and families of Lyttelton Methodist Church.

- Donate Non-Perishable Food Items: We welcome donations of food such as canned goods, rice, pasta, and other long-lasting staples. Every item helps us support a family in need.
- Food Parcel Distribution: Once the parcels are prepared, they are carefully distributed to those in our community who need it most.
Through the Samaritan Project, we not only provide physical nourishment, but also extend hope, dignity, and the love of Christ to our neighbors. Your generous contributions and support make a real difference. Thank you for helping us bring light to those in need.
